Out of pocket expenses

man confused about the out of pocket costs for surgery

Private insurance generally does not cover doctors’ fees. Private insurance covers most of the costs of the hospital, but in fact only pays for a small fraction of the doctors’ costs, which is mostly reimbursed to the insurance company from Medicare in any case.

There was a period from 2013 to 2020 where Medicare was frozen completely despite significant increases in doctors’ practice costs and inflation. There was no increase in Medicare.

Some private insurers did increase their rates, usually within one or two percent per annum, while some didn’t.

Doctors’ fees have needed to increase due to massive increases in overheads, such as medical insurance, which has increased by almost 300% over ten years, for example. The private insurance rebates have only increased by single figures during that period.

For example, for the Surgeon’s fees to Fix a clavicle fracture with a plate, and for all follow up consultation appointments (Item number 47465), the 2026 Medicare Reimbursement is $464.85.
