The best shoulder surgeons in Melbourne all work at the bigger hospitals, but some peripheral hospitals offer a great experience for the patient. As a prerequisite, I generally will only suggest hospitals with some form of Intensive Care Unit, as all surgery comes at some risk. The risks that a patient needs medical support are fairly low in the general population. But as patients age, the risks do increase. It is more common for patients requiring large reconstruction type procedures in the much older population that do require the backup of a higher level service if required.
It is rare, however, that this is ever required, but my firm opinion is that all surgery does come at some risk, and the bigger hospitals often provide a high level of service with intensive care units.
My hospitals of preference include Epworth in Richmond and Epworth Box Hill and St. John of God Hospital in Berwick, which all have high level aftercare service, as in some cases, complications may occur, which aren’t specific to the joint itself, but rather due to the medical risks of the patient.
